JEFFERSON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES TWO OPEN ENROLLMENT COLLEGE PREPARATORY CHARTER SCHOOLS SCHEDULED TO OPEN FALL 2015

September 9, 2014 – Laureate Academy Charter School and Jefferson RISE Charter School, both non-selective, tuition-free, public charter schools focused on literacy and college preparation, were approved by the Jefferson Parish School Board on September 3, 2014. Laureate Academy will open its doors to 60 kindergarteners and 60 first graders in August 2015; Jefferson RISE will open its doors to 120 sixth graders in August 2015. Both will use a slow growth model, and grow one grade per year until they reach their full grade spans.

Both schools will prepare students in Jefferson Parish for colleges and professional careers. “We believe that all children, regardless of demographic, can excel academically,” says Claire Heckerman, Lead Founder of Laureate Academy. Kathleen Sullivan, Lead Founder of Jefferson RISE, echoed this sentiment and added, “With a safe and structured learning environment, our students will go on to be successful in college and life.”

Lead Founders Claire Heckerman and Kathleen Sullivan have had the support of Building Excellent Schools, a national non-profit that trains high-capacity individuals to design, found, lead, and sustain excellent charter schools in underserved communities nationwide. www.buildingexcellentschools.org.
